Five-Year-Old Dies in Philadelphia Car Accident

Monday, January 30th, 2012

On Sunday morning, a two-vehicle car accident in North Philadelphia led to the death of a 5-year-old boy, who was ejected from a Ford Expedition that carried four passengers. According to police, the accident occurred near West York Street and North 24th Street. The boy was quickly taken to St. Christopher’s Children’s Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival. Another young passenger – a 2-year-old female – was also taken to a local hospital to evaluate and treat minor injuries.

The 43-year-old driver of the Ford Expedition was traveling on York Street when she ran a red light at the intersection of 24th Street. Because of her traffic violation, a Toyota Corolla that was driven by a 61-year-old man struck the Expedition on the right side, causing it to roll over. The driver of the Toyota wasn’t injured.

White House’s New Research Initiative Targets Veterans’ Health Issues, Including Brain Injury

Friday, January 27th, 2012

A recent White House initiative proposes to expand the study of veterans’ health care issues – such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) – at America’s medical schools. Proposed by First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden, the Joining Forces initiative will provide much-needed medical support to veterans nationwide.

The Joining Forces initiative will unite with the Association of American Medical Colleges, the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, and 130 schools and research facilities to leverage missions in research, clinical care, and education, training America’s doctors to meet the unique needs of military officers and veterans.

Advances in the diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of brain injury and PTSD are the main goal of the initiative, which seeks to move medical science forward in the same way that America has led the world for over 200 years. As the Marks &  Harrison statements says, “We look forward to disabled veterans across Virginia and the rest of the country reaping the benefits of research that will one day mitigate, reverse, or cure many disabilities.

Jets’ Wide Receiver Plaxico Burress Sued for Car Accident

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

NFL star Plaxico Burress – a wide receiver for the New York Jets – recently lost a lawsuit that will cost him six figures. Filed back in 2008 in Florida, the lawsuit was brought forward by a woman who claims that Burress rear-ended her while he was driving his Mercedes-Benz. He did not have insurance at the time.

The woman alleges that she suffered serious back and neck injuries from the car accident. She sued Burgess for medical expenses, lost income, and other damages. The jury finally ruled in her favor earlier this month, and over the weekend, the judge ordered Burgess to pay up $125,000 – plus interest.

Car accidents can have repercussions long after a victim has recovered from their injuries. The financial hardship of paying for hospital care, not being able to work, and other losses can affect a victim’s future for years to come.

If you or one of your loved ones has been injured in a Florida car accident, make sure you receive the compensation you deserve. Please contact the experienced car accident lawyers at Ellis, Ged, & Bodden, P.A. today for a free case evaluation.

Railroad Worker Dies in Texas Train Accident

Thursday, January 12th, 2012

Authorities are currently investigating a train accident that resulted in the death of a BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe) railroad worker in Amarillo, Texas. Police currently believe that a “grinder” – or maintenance car – struck the man and pushed him underneath the train. By the time EMS was able to go underneath the train, they determined the man was dead.

The identity of the worker has not been released, but police describe him as a white man in his 50s. They believe he was attempting to repair a leak when the train car struck him at a low rate of speed. His injuries were mostly internal. Criminal charges are not anticipated, but BNSF is proceeding with an internal investigation. At the moment, a potential miscommunication is being faulted for the train accident.

Railroad workers are often put in dangerous situations where high-level communication and adherence to safety protocols are absolutely necessary. When railroad companies neglect to observe all of these protocols, serious injury or wrongful death may be the consequence.
